Visit to London

Tuesday’s fog did not stop Year 6’s visit to London!

Our first port of call was the Science Museum – where we visited the Information Age and Medicine Galleries. Both of which were full of interesting exhibits celebrating 200 years of information technology and some of the most significant medical collections in the World.

Followed by a scenic tour of London, seeing some of the famous sights like “The Ivy”, “Harrods”, The London Eye, The Mall, Westminster Bridge and a brief glimpse of Buckingham Palace…

Finishing with a tour of the Houses of Parliament. Including a visit to the House of Lords (we saw Lord Coe – instrumental in the organisation of London’s Olympics in 2012) and the House of Commons (our ex Prime Minister Teresa May was speaking and Diane Abbot was in residence).

Having an understanding of our election system (we had our very own election prior to Christmas), we had a debating workshop to further enhance our skills and knowledge.

The Ayes have it!

Crime and Punishment

Our History topic this term is Crime and Punishment. Looking through the ages at the various punishments for a whole variety of crimes, showing how society at the time viewed that crime.

We studied The Smithfield Decretals, renowned for its extraordinary programme of marginal illumination. There are approximately 675 surviving manuscripts of this text, which was an essential work for legal study during the Middle Ages.

Our task was to annotate the images with a number of explanatory statements.

As this great example from Jack’s book shows.

Mental Maths Morning Warm-up..

Each morning, Year 6 test their mathematical skills with a variety of maths questions.

The idea being that by May, when we have our SATS, every child should feel confident at answering the questions and also have another, different method of checking their answers.

Well done Tom – every single question correct!

Attendance Award!

First week back after the Chrismas break and Freshwater Class were awarded the Attendance Award!

This was the icing on the cake for our return to school in the spectacular new building and what a view we have from our classroom window, we’re level with the treetops….

Determination Award

We are so proud of Taylor, who was awarded the Award for Determination at his sailing club – what an amazing achievement!

Taylor is stood in front of the artwork he created for his manifesto in English. Year 6 are holding their very own election on Thursday, mirroring the current adult decisions with their very own debates.

Straw & Order!

This morning, we were privileged to watch the dress rehearsal of Years 3 and 4’s Christmas production of “Straw and Order”.

It was packed full of wonderful songs and enthusiastic acting, an outstanding performance – well done!

The show will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, 10th December) at Medina Theatre – doors open at 6.30pm, for the show to start at 7pm.

Gingerbread Baking with Reception!

This morning the whole of Year 6 and Reception forged new friendships by baking gingerbread cookies ready for the Christmas Fayre this afternoon.

The biscuits were also iced – although lots of the decoration sweets ended up in mouths but the end results looked incredibly tasty!

And best of all, we made some new friends…

Stay Well This Winter – Flu Vaccinations

The largest ever flu vaccination program in England – Stay Well This Winter – has been launched this year and all Island primary schools are taking part.

Pupils will receive their vaccination via a nasal spray. This has a higher proven rate of success for children than the traditional injection, and is received much more comfortably.

This morning, it was Year 6’s turn!

Bikeability – Cycling Proficiency Test for the 21st Century!

Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme. It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling.

Over the last week, some of our Year 6’s have been taking part in this scheme.  The importance of the correct cycle helmet, clothing and a fully working bike was stressed.  As well as teaching these young cyclists the skills and knowledge to use the road safely, including using a roundabout and entering and leaving road junctions.
